{"id":517,"date":"2021-04-30T11:20:52","date_gmt":"2021-04-30T11:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.illuminate.co.com\/?p=517"},"modified":"2021-07-27T10:44:03","modified_gmt":"2021-07-27T10:44:03","slug":"driving-positive-behaviours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.illuminate.co.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/30\/driving-positive-behaviours\/","title":{"rendered":"Driving positive behaviours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;grid&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221; z_index=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243; css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1566406304942{padding-right: 10% !important;}&#8221;][vc_column_text]The last 12 months has shone a spotlight on how leaders are dealing with the impact of Covid-19 for themselves, their staff, and their business\u2019s.\u00a0 During this period of rapid change and transition, there is an increasing need to improve the way we support each other by showing empathy and understanding to one another.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been working with leaders who have been concerned about their leadership shadow, doubting their confidence as a leader, concerned about their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their teams.<\/p>\n<p>In thinking this through, the\u00a0SCARF\u00a0model created by David Rock &#8211; a brain-based\u00a0model\u00a0of behaviour, provides guidance to leaders and managers on how to better engage, collaborate and influence their teams.<\/p>\n<p>Our brain organises information into Threat\/Danger and Reward\/Safety.\u00a0 When we experience a social threat, our brain perceives this with the same intensity as actual physical threats.\u00a0 Our threat response is strong, it is faster and longer lasting than the reward response.\u00a0 When we are under threat, our ability to solve problems or make decisions or interact with others is diminished. \u00a0\u00a0When we are in a \u2018reward environment\u2019 these abilities are enhanced, where we can be more creative and strategic in our thinking and behaviours.<\/p>\n<p>The SCARF model encompasses five domains or dimensions of human social experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Status<\/strong> \u2013 our own importance relative to others i.e., knowledge, position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Certainty<\/strong> \u2013 our perception of how well we can predict the future<\/p>\n<p><strong>Autonomy<\/strong> \u2013 having a sense of control and being able to make choices<\/p>\n<p><strong>Relatedness<\/strong> \u2013 sense of belonging and safety<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fairness<\/strong> \u2013 feeling of connection and fair exchange with others<\/p>\n<p>We all perceive these five domains differently \u2013 one leader\u2019s idea of a status reward will be different to another.\u00a0 As a leader, it is worth reflecting on these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How am I contributing to these domains i.e., how am I creating a sense of reward and how am I creating a threat response?<\/li>\n<li>Which domains really play into the role or in the work that I\u2019m doing?<\/li>\n<li>What triggers a threat or a reward response in myself?<\/li>\n<li>How might I need to adapt my leadership style, communication style to reduce threat and increase reward?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These domains are all interlinked so it\u2019s worth exploring how threats and rewards might be managed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Status<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How are you <em>being <\/em>in your role as a leader or manager?<\/p>\n<p>Challenge your limiting beliefs and assumptions where you find it doesn\u2019t serve the best interests of your team.\u00a0 How can you re-establish status and build self-value? How do you acknowledge contribution and recognise effort?\u00a0 Allowing people to self-review their performance is an important step to stimulate positive behavioural change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Certainty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How can you help increase a sense of certainty where little certainty exists, such as communicating organisational changes and soliciting feedback\/ input for the path forward?<\/p>\n<p>Our brain craves prediction and certainty.\u00a0 Encourage your team to create predictability and routines where they can in parts of their everyday life.\u00a0 Establishing clearer expectations on projects\/ tasks with desired outcomes and with the clarity that helps to create a sense of assurance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Autonomy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How are you creating autonomy? What can you let go of?<\/p>\n<p>Explore what is within your control and help support your team to focus on what they can control and influence to open up options and new choices.
